Important Information on Community Hours and Volunteerism

As we all know our community organization is a volunteer run organization. Our various programs require continued volunteer support. Although we have lots of work ahead of us to get our organization moving, we have come to realize that those who participate to get things done are not many. Only a few give their valued time and participate in their community organization.

The community organization believes that the community work being done by few will not sufficiently address our needs and hence has devised some important means to include all of its membership into active community participation.

One of these means to instill community participation is obliging its membership to collect community hours. A ECAE from now on considers a community member in good standing from now as someone who has fulfilled his community obligations by completing the following:

  • Has paid all his financial obligations including:
    • All pledges to the community organization (past and present)
    • Membership fee ($20 for single and $30 for family
    • Hall fee ($200)
    • One time new member processing fee ($10)
  • Has attained 40 community hour as tallied as follows:
    • Of which 4 hours are attained during the annual Heritage Fest held at the beginning of August
    • Of which 2 hours attained by attending ECAE meetings *. A member will need to attend at least two meetings described below (each meeting will be counted as one hour).
    • Of which 8 hours are attained by attending the ECAE events **. A member will need to attend at least four of these events described below (each event will be counted as two hour).

* The ECAE conducts three (3) meetings in a year. The Annual General Meeting is held in November every year. This is one of the meetings members are encouraged to attend. There are also two (2) General Membership Meetings. In total a member in good standing will have to attend two of these meetings.

** The ECAE also has six (6) events. In total a member in good standing will have to attend four of these events. These are:

  • New-year’s day celebrations,
  • ምዓልቲ ሰማእታት”,
  • ምዓልቲ ናጽነት”,
  • ባሕቲ መስከረም”,
  • Graduation BBQ
  • Community Recognition Day

The remainder of the community hours are to be completed by participating in the various community programs and projects outlined below. Our current programs and projects are as follows:

  • Heritage Language School
  • English Language assistance program
  • Youth Mentorship Program
  • Community Connectivity
  • Refugee and Sponsorship
  • Hall Project
  • Events
  • Social Media and Web
  • Radio Program
  • General Administrative (Grants and Funding etc…)

If you would like to get involved in any of these programs please do not hesitate to contact us at contact@ecaedmonton.com. Please let us know in which program and/or project you would like to get involved in and we will contact you shortly.

We implore that people get involved early to collect their valuable community hours as these are required to be considered a member with good standing. The more we sit on this the hard it gets to meet our obligations.
